The actual vascular malformations are divided according to their flow. Those with low flow are venous (such as orbital varices), capillary-venous or lymphatic (lymphangiomas). High-flow malformations, which are rarer, are arteriovenous or arterial (aneurysm).
The management depends on the type of lesion, its nature and its location. Treatment can be medical, surgical, and sometimes other interventional techniques such as embolization (obstructing a vessel by injecting a synthetic embolus) or sclerotherapy (medicine is injected into the lesion to make it shrink).
